A Legacy of Excellence and Innovation
Adelaide High School, established in 1908, has long been a pioneer in Australian education. With a commitment to innovation and excellence, the school caters to 1900 students from Years 7-12, offering a dynamic learning environment. Embracing a diverse range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities, Adelaide High empowers students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Embracing Immersive Technology
Driven by a dedication to fostering impactful learning experiences, Adelaide High eagerly embraced the Lumination Learning Lab. With a meticulous consideration of student outcomes and providing teachers with the opportunity to transform the learning environment, the school recognised the potential of immersive technology to elevate learning across STEM disciplines.
The school found space for their smart classroom in an under-utilised multi-purpose space that was being used across science and art lessons due to its size and theatre style configuration. The classroom has now been transformed into a Lumination Learning Lab, featuring four stations and breakout seating areas, the Lab facilitates immersive, observational, and station-based learning experiences.
Hear from Lewis Weeden, Head of STEM at Adelaide High School
“We have noticed an increased engagement in our students within the subjects that we’ve implemented it in, we use our Lumination Learning Lab for our STEM club which has generated a lot of interest in our students around using VR education and our students always come in with a ‘wow!’”
“I saw that there was a real opportunity for us to actually create spaces where students experience, and that experience adds richness to their learning.”

The school’s STEM Club is utilising 360 cameras to create a virtual tour of the school, with plans to feature it on the school’s website. This project aims to showcase the school’s facilities and provide an immersive experience for prospective students and visitors.
Empowering Educators
With eight dedicated Lab Champions, led by Lewis Weeden, Adelaide High School is committed to training as many staff members as possible in using immersive technologies, ensuring the Lab continues to drive innovative and effective teaching and learning practices at Adelaide High.
These experienced champions have completed all three core professional development sessions—Onboarding, AR/VR Kit, and Creation Kit—along with curriculum planning, all led by Lumination Learning Designers.
To maintain momentum and provide ongoing support, school leadership also engages in fortnightly check-ins with Lumination, to help track progress.
Integration Across Curriculum
Adelaide High School has successfully integrated their Lumination Learning Lab across various curriculum areas. Year 12 Physics students have enhanced their understanding of concepts through BBC Home: A VR Spacewalk, immersing themselves in a virtual space environment. Year 11 Psychology students have used Tilt Brush and various meditation applications to delve into the concept of wellbeing and examine the impact of virtual reality technologies on mental health.
In Year 7 Food Technology, students have explored the farm-to-plate process using VR through the Harvest Simulator, complemented by an in-person session from a local farm. This allowed them to compare and contrast the learning experiences provided by virtual reality and direct interaction.
“The teachers that have been able to use [the Lumination Learning Lab] in their classes, have been able to take their units and transform them or look at content from a different angle”, says Lewis Weeden, Head of STEM at Adelaide High School.
