Powering the Future with Innovation
As the largest high school on the Eyre Peninsula, Port Lincoln High School (PLHS) offers a wide variety of subject choices, catering to diverse post-schooling pathways, from tertiary education to trades and employment.
Established in 1923, PLHS has been dedicated to providing a safe and engaging educational environment, encouraging students to discover their passions and lead in their chosen fields through a blend of traditional and innovative learning methods.
Embracing Innovation with Lumination
PLHS partnered with Lumination to build a state-of-the-art Lumination Learning Lab, integrating virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) to create immersive learning experiences.
Hear from Lesley Warren, Deputy Principal at Port Lincoln High School
“In rural towns, we are often playing catch up, particularly with technology, so it’s great that we can be a leader in this area.”
The Lab offers VR content linked to the curriculum, enhancing engagement and collaboration across all subjects. With Lumination’s LeadMe Labs classroom management software, the space transforms into an immersive hub in seconds, keeping the focus on learning and helping students develop critical skills for the future workforce.
Transform your schoolImmersive Experiences Across the Curriculum
The Lumination Learning Lab is being used extensively across various subjects to deepen students’ understanding and engagement. In physical education, students explore biomechanics and the intricacies of the human body through detailed, immersive simulations, allowing them to visualise and analyse movement in a way that traditional methods cannot match.
Year 7 students embark on virtual explorations of Nefertari’s tomb as part of their ancient history studies, bringing ancient Egypt to life and providing a tangible connection to the past.
Senior classes are also integrating the Lumination Learning Lab into their biology classes, using The Body VR and Journey to the Center of the Cell experiences to delve into the complex world of cellular biology. These tools allow them to explore cells in three dimensions, enhancing their comprehension of cellular structures and functions. By combining IMVR with HHVR, students receive an enriched learning experience that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical understanding.
Students Leading the Way
Students at PLHS are using the Lab to step into their subject matter and explore new ways of understanding information. They create 3D models to showcase their ideas, visualising information alongside peers, and engage in active learning.
For example, using VR headsets, students explore sustainable cities around the world and then work together to create their own sustainable developments using 3D creation, coding, and virtual reality to embark on a journey with Port Lincoln High School as they revolutionise education through their partnership with Lumination, creating a dynamic learning environment with the Lumination Learning Lab.
This immersive learning environment is designed to inspire students to think creatively and critically, preparing them for the challenges of the future and empowering them to make a positive impact on the world.
Achieving Equitable Education
Thanks to the connection with the Port Lincoln Special School, neurodiverse students also have access to the Lumination Learning Lab. This inclusion allows them to benefit from the same cutting-edge technology as their peers, enhancing their learning experiences in ways that cater to their unique needs.
The immersive nature of IMVR technology provides neurodiverse students with an engaging and interactive way to explore educational content, helping to hold their attention and make complex concepts more understandable. This approach supports equitable education, ensuring all students have the opportunity to succeed regardless of their learning differences.
Jesse, a student from Port Lincoln Special School, shared his excitement: “I enjoyed using the VR goggles, it was pretty cool because I could see the video all around me. It’s like you are in the real world.”
The immersive environment can reduce sensory overload by allowing students to control their focus, making the learning process more comfortable and effective for neurodiverse learners.
Transforming Spaces and Perspectives
The teachers and students at Port Lincoln also receive support from Lumination to ensure that everyone is equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively integrate advanced technology into their educational experience. This support includes providing onboarding sessions for Lab Champions, conducting teacher planning sessions, and offering ongoing support sessions for teachers and students.
“[Since becoming a Lab Champion], my perception has evolved to view immersive technology as a world of potential whose limits are not yet fully understood. It provides personalised learning experiences that engage students, deepen their understanding, and prepares them for success in the 21st century. In that respect, it serves as a valuable tool on the pathway to equity and excellence,” says Ben Henrichs, Teacher and Lab Champion at PLHS.
