Ardrossan Area School took a bold step into the future of education by launching the Lumination Learning Lab. Principal Margaret Roads emphasises, “Our whole vision is around our kids developing the skills they need for the future – problem solving, creativity, curiosity.”
By embracing immersive technology, the school ensures its students are prepared for the demands of tomorrow’s workforce, enriching their learning experiences and broadening their horizons.
Embracing Innovation with Lumination
To accommodate the Lumination Learning Lab, Ardrossan Area School repurposed existing spaces, ensuring that the Lab is accessible and ready for integration into the curriculum. The dedicated space is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including VR headsets, interactive resources, and various digital tools, making it a hub for innovative learning. Margaret Roads expressed a passion for providing students with access to experiences they may not otherwise encounter in regional South Australia. She shared her excitement about witnessing how immersive learning can enrich their understanding and expand their horizons.

“For our kids in the country, it is really important we give them these experiences. It doesn’t replace what you do in real life but it adds to what we are able to do.”
The Lab offers VR content linked to the curriculum, enhancing engagement and collaboration across all subjects. With Lumination’s LeadMe classroom management software, the space transforms into an immersive hub in seconds, maintaining a focus on learning and helping students develop critical skills for the future workforce.

Utilising the Lab for Educational Excellence
The digital tools in the Lumination Learning Lab are supporting Ardrossan’s Site Improvement goal of developing capabilities for the future. Digital technology is now taught across R-6 as a specialist subject, and the six Lab Champions are using the space to support their teaching and learning programs.
Notably, Ardrossan’s ‘729’ program immerses students in virtual reality, utilising provocations and learner agency to collaborate on learning design. In the Digital Technology group, students leverage these tools for individual projects, enhancing their technical skills and creative thinking.
Measuring Success
In just the first six months since the Lab’s opening, Ardrossan Area School has seen significant achievements. The tools have enhanced teaching and learning programs, increased student engagement, and fostered learner agency. Staff confidence in using the tools has grown, and more teachers are actively exploring how to incorporate these technologies into their subjects.

Ongoing Support from Lumination
The Lab Champions at Ardrossan Area School have access to 2 years of educational support from the expert Education team at Lumination, which will include continued professional development through courses, curriculum planning, and technical support and training with our Learning Designers.
The professional learning sessions conducted on-site so far have been extremely beneficial, allowing all teachers to participate, not just the Lab Champions. The curriculum support we provide has helped teachers find resources efficiently, ensuring that planning time is optimised and the content meets their needs.

Looking Ahead
Teachers rate their confidence in using the Lab highly, and Professional Learning sessions have been crucial in building this confidence. The school aims to bring all resources together to enable student-driven learning, focusing on developing skill sets for using technology in impactful ways. They plan to incorporate the Lab’s tools across all year levels and curriculum areas, such as creating virtual stories in English and visiting places around the world in their HASS lessons.
