Smart Classrooms in High Demand Across South Australian Schools

Lumination’s world class technology is improving learning outcomes at schools across the state and beyond

Adelaide, South Australia | 21 November, 2022 — Investing in smart classrooms, educational leaders across South Australia are better preparing students for the world of work. Goolwa Secondary College (Goolwa) and Adelaide Botanic High School (ABHS) are two of over 20 schools that have partnered with immersive technology company Lumination, offering students access to virtual and augmented reality.

Recently opening state of the art Lumination Learning Labs, Goolwa and ABHS are increasing student access to experiential learning. Automated, multi-purpose and immersive environments, Lumination Learning Labs offer effective collaborative learning experiences in the real and digital world.

“It’s not just about the technology, it’s about what it allows us to do better and differently,” says Alistair Brown, Principal at ABHS. “If we can set our students up to be creative thinkers and to see problems as being multi-solvable, rather than a simplistic solution, then we’re setting them up with the skills that will take them into the future.”

Along with a Lab inclusive of virtual and augmented reality technology, the schools have access to resources, lesson plans and ongoing support from Lumination’s Education and IT teams to ensure seamless adoption.

“Learning now is not what it was before; students are always looking for a real world connection,” says Travis Roach, Deputy Principal at Goolwa Secondary College. “Being a rural school, having a Lab like this, where we can do immersive virtual reality, brings the learning experiences to our students without the cost and expenses that might come otherwise.”

Lumination Learning Labs offer virtual reality content directly linked to the curriculum, from STEM to HASS to physical education, increasing engagement and collaboration across all subjects.

“This classroom’s different to all the other classrooms,” says Emily, a Year 8 student at Goolwa. “Instead of just being told the information, you’re able to actually experience it and see what it’s like.”

Joe Davidson, a teacher at Goolwa and a Learning Lab Champion, has noticed increased engagement in his Studio class. Currently completing a unit on empathy, the immersive VR enables his students to empathise with the content in ways he hasn’t seen before.

“They can learn from the books, from online, from the videos as much as they want; but until they actually step in it, they struggle to see and feel that it is a place”, says Davidson. “This space is state of the art, and it’s world class.”

Lumination is rapidly expanding, recently opening a second office in Sydney, News South Wales. Taking the first mover advantage, Holroyd High School will be the first to open a Lab in the state in early 2023. Learn more about Lumination at lumination.com.au.
